Samuel Adams Porch Rocker
Tart & refreshing, this unique summer quencher is our twist on the Bavarian Radler, named for cyclists that originated this drink. Traditionally a mixture of beer and lemonade, for our take we combined the crispness of a golden Helles lager with a blend of lemons to create a fresh squeezed tangy taste perfect for the long yet fleeting days of summer.
By mixing beer & tart sparkling lemonade, German cyclists (called Radlers) helped inspire a crisp, refreshing drink perfect for long hot days. With that inspiration, we used a blend of lemons for a fresh squeezed lemon taste, & combined it with a golden Helles lager creating a sweet, tangy & thoroughly refreshing brew.
To create Porch Rocker, we first brewed a Helles, a German lager whose name translates to “light colored”. Our Helles is a golden straw color with a light maltiness and subtle hop note. To develop this brew into a Radler we combined it with a blend of lemons for a bright, fresh citrus note, creating just the right balance of sweetness & subtle tartness.
A traditional Bavarian Radler is lager mixed with German-style lemonade, or lemon soda. This refreshing concoction got its name from the German cyclists that first inspired it. In the 1920’s a Bavarian innkeeper developed the drink when a large group of cyclists stopped by and he realized he didn’t have enough beer to go around. So he mixed what little he had with lemonade and called it Radlermass (or cyclist’s liter) and the style quickly took off. Today, Radlers are still enjoyed across Bavaria where they mix the beer and lemonade at the tap.

Samuel Adams, the man, did this in the name of American Independence. Jim Koch did this in the name of Better Beer. Jim Koch named his beer after Sam Adams because he shared a similar spirit in leading the fight for independence and the opportunity for all Americans to pursue happiness and follow their dreams.
The Boston Brewery is where all our beers get their start, with the exception of Boston Lager, which was born in our founder Jim Koch’s kitchen. It is the smallest of our three breweries, but it is the most important.
We’re constantly innovating and pushing the boundaries of brewing to make sure that from the ingredients to the glass, every pint of Sam Adams beer is as good (if not better) than the last.
